Does Your Dog Love You This Valentine's Day?
February 13, 2009
Love is In The Air, Dog Lovers!

All around us we're seeing red! (And pink and purple, too.)

Chocolates, lace, roses, and cupids decorate grocery stores, libraries, and schools this time of year. Whether or not you've got a special person in your life this Valentine's Day, it's a great time to ask yourself - Does My Dog Love Me?

Of Course My Dog Loves Me!

If you answer yourself adamantly, knowing that your dog's heart is filled with love for you, you may not need to worry about what he's planning for tomorrow, after all.

But, if you've observed any of the following "wandering" behaviors, read on for ways to win back your pooch!

Signs Your Dog May Not Be Showing His Love For You Properly

  • Your dog gallantly rushes through the door first whenever it is opened, protecting you from danger and knocking into you on the way past.
  • Your dog nibbles treats delicately out of your hand - whether or not you INTEND to be feeding him or yourself!
  • Your dog jumps on you and all your friends to embrace you in a big hug when you get home - even if you're wearing your easy-to-run nylons and your dry-clean only suit.
  • When you call his name, your dog looks over, but then ignores you - going back to what he was doing before.
  • When you are enjoying each other's company in bed in the evening, you find yourself with less and less space available on the bed. Soon he's got the prime position, and you're getting close to sleeping on the floor - ouch!

It may be easy to brush off these unfeeling behaviors and think, "That's just like a dog!" but the truth is, these may be signs that your dog doesn't love you in the way you think!

Make Sure You're Number One In Your Dog's Heart!

These are all signs of dominant behavior and if your dog is displaying them, it means he thinks HE'S the boss of the house - not you!

Make sure you occupy the dominant role in your dog's heart, or the next time you find yourself snuggling with him on the couch over a movie late at night, you may find yourself haunted with real questions about where your relationship is heading!

If you need help reining in your dog's inappropriate affection, dominance and other behaviors, I highly recommend a dog training manual as a gift to both of you this Valentine's Day. Invest in your relationship by investigating the quick, easy and effective techniques that you can use to communicate with your dog, maintain proper boundaries by becoming the dominant leader of your family "pack" and showing your dog YOU LOVE HIM, in ways he'll understand.
