Fun in the Sun With Your Dog
July 10, 2009
Hi there,

Well, the "dog days" of summer are upon us, even if it's only July. I'm not sure where that expression comes from, but summer is definitely for the dogs in my book. It seems like there's so much fun being had outdoors, that there's plenty of opportunity to enjoy spending time with our dogs. However, it's important to keep a few health and safety tips in mind during the summer time.

Fun and Safety Tips For Your Dog In The Summer Heat

  1. Help your dog stay cool by traveling with a water bottle for him and a bowl for him to drink out of. You never know when the water fountain in the park might be broken. Dogs can't cool themselves by sweating, they cool off by panting. It's important for them to stay hydrated, so make sure you're packing water.
  2. Mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks can be a problem at this time of year. Be sure he's protected with the proper medications.
  3. Don't bring your dog with you if you're just running errands around town. It can get too hot for him inside your car. If he must come, take him with you and tie him up outside the car, so he doesn't overheat due to the greenhouse effect from the glass of your car's windshield and windows.
  4. Dog paws can burn! If your dog is having trouble walking on the scorching pavement or sand, pick him up, or let him walk on the grass or dirt which will be cooler.
  5. Take your dog swimming.
  6. Introducing Your Dog To The Water

Most dogs love to swim if they are exposed to the water gradually and at a young age. If your dog is nervous about getting into the water, don't force him. Take him somewhere where the water starts off shallow and gets deeper gradually so he can enter the water at his own pace.

If you can find a popular swimming hole where he can see other dogs enjoying the cool blue, so much the better. Dogs do learn by example. Make his introduction to the water fun by using toys and treats, and keeping it short. Playing in the water is a great way for him to exercise and keep cool at the same time.

Whatever you do, make sure you get a chance to enjoy the outdoors and get some exercise with your dog.

P.S. If you need to stock up on flea and tick treatments to keep your dog healthy in the great outdoors you can get Frontline and Advantix here, less expensively than at your vet's office.
