Surprise - The year's first sighting
October 26, 2005
Hi,

Well, it took me by surprise when it happened last night...

The Time: 6:30 PM on a chilly autumn evening.

The Place: The neighborhood mailbox.

The Subject: An adorable little brown terrier.

That's right, my little Chickadee, just as I was walking down the front stairs yesterday, I spotted him at a distance. That terrier was wearing a bright red dog sweater!

This red-breasted creature in the vest was like the First Robin of Spring. Certainly a harbinger of many more dog sweater sightings to come this year.

He was being walked by a friendly lady who was busy on her cell phone, so I didn't have a chance to rave to her about how cute her little sidekick was in his bright regalia. For his part, he paid me no mind and looked content as could be, sniffing through the grass searching for wonderful smells.

The whole encounter reminded me that winter is coming - and Christmas - and what better dog lover gift idea than to knit someone a homemade sweater for his or her dog. Sweaters for small dogs are relatively quick to knock out and unlike baby sweaters, they're not quickly outgrown but can be used again and again.

I have developed an archive of dog sweater patterns that are free of charge, whether you knit, sew or crochet, I know you can find a fun little project to work on as you're staying warm indoors with your family this Fall.

Visit the dog sweater pattern archive and let me know what you think of these patterns. If you develop a variation of your own that you'd like to share, please let me know!

Sincerely,

Emily Cressey
