April's Here and You Know What That Means... April 17, 2009 |
Ahh, April! Spring is in the air! Bulbs are blooming, the tax man is paid, and the song birds are starting to return from their winter vacations. Know what else is starting to return? Maybe you don't want to know... Ewww...Gross!How gross is it when you are sitting with your dog on the couch, innocently watching some TV and eating a snack, when you see a flea crawling through her fur? Kera is a yellow lab/golden retriever mix, her hair is pretty short and light, so it was easy to see the critters... If your dog is black or has especially long fur... look out! You don't know what you might be missing! When I found those bugs, I freaked out! I sat my dog down and spent about 45 minutes going through all her fur and trying to catch the fleas by hand and kill them by putting them in a cup of rubbing alcohol. Where there's one, there's more then one. Trust me. After that little session, I knew I'd be paranoid for the rest of the summer that they'd come back. We needed help!Since Kera was a guide-dog puppy in training, I had a lot of support from dog experts who were willing to advise me on what to do. They said that I needed to treat her for fleas. I was a little nervous because I didn't like the idea of putting something toxic on my dog, but they recommended Frontline or Advantix Flea Killer
I put it on her and then I didn't have to worry about the bugs crawling all over my dog (and getting on me, in our couch, and on our clothes!) when I sat with her. We could go out walking in the woods without my being nervous the whole time about her sweeping up all the fleas in the forest and bringing them into my car. Since fleas and ticks can carry Lyme Disease, it's important that you and your family have a good way of keeping them off your pets and out of your house. The guide dog agency also REQUIRED us to treat Kera with heartworm medication. What are heartworms?Heartworms get into the bloodstream from mosquito bites and the worms go through the circulatory system to the heart where they grow and create serious health problems and death. They can be life threatening and are carried by cats and dogs and other wild animals so they are bad news! How To Keep Your Pet SafeAsk your vet about whether you need to be protecting your dog from fleas, ticks and heartworm in your part of the country. Chances are YOU DO, the question is just when are they active? Bugs can go dormant in the winter in some colder climates, but if they're in your house, you may want to continue treating your pets! When it comes to actually buying medicine for heart worm, ticks, and fleas, I would order online because it's a lot less expensive.
