Little puppies make big messes
October 28, 2005
Hi,

I was speaking to a neighbor a few weeks ago about her sadness at the death of her 14-year-old Golden Retriever, Max. Many a day a last Spring, I saw her out walking with Max, both of them going at a slow pace, probably due to Max's painful arthritis.

This neighbor was devestated that she had to put Max down last June, after his many years of faithful companionship.

She swore she'd never get another dog, but when she saw this little puppy in the litter... I guess she just couldn't resist. Here she was on a rainy, drizzly day walking out in the damp with a new pup. He looked just as cute as any fuzzy golden retriever pup, but he had a white strip down his nose. Although Dad was a Golden Retriever, apparently his mother was an Australian Shepherd so he'll be a little smaller (and a lot more rambunctous) than her last dog, methinks.

Despite the golden glow eminating from the dog, my poor neighbor looked a little distraught as she walked her yellow fuzzball.

Apparently, her hubby was supposed to have been watching Fuzz while she was in the shower, and unbeknownst to Hubby, the little rascal sneaked into the master bedroom and made a secret delivery (yes, an accident, and #2 at that) on their bedroom floor.

House training puppies can be an EXTREMELY frustrating process. In fact, the sad facts show that thousands of dogs are left off in the pound every year because their owners don't know how to teach them to "go outside."

If you know anyone who is struggling with a young puppy in the house, you can bet that housetraining (along with nipping) is probably their number one complaint. Fortunately, once you master the basics of house training, it's something that can be taught quickly and easily if you are consistent. The key is to be vigilant, consistant, and confine the puppy to a crate when you can't watch him.

If potty training your puppy or older dog is something you need help with, please make sure you educate yourself, first. It will save you and your dog a lot of frustration. This book, Potty Train Your Puppy, will help you create the structure your puppy needs to learn his potty routine quickly! He'll learn to communicate when he wants to go out so you'll have NO MORE ACCIDENTS. Your puppy, your carpet, and maybe even your hubby will thank you!

If you've already got your dog potty trained, the good news is you've made it through the most challenging period of puppyhood. Now just learn to defeat nipping and cat-chasing and you'll have it made! I shall discuss these topics in a future issue.

That's all for now,

Emily Cressey
