Citronella Dog Collars

Dog barking problems got you down? You might find citronella dog collars to be the miracle you've been searching for! If you are looking for a safe, effective way to train your dog to stop barking, you will be pleased with the results from a citronella collar!

How do Citronella Dog Collars Work?

These marvelous little collars work their magic by immediately spraying a fine citrus-scented mist into the air, each time it detects your dog barking. The dog finds this scented spray confusing and offensive, in his confusion, he stops barking and the collar stops spraying. Your dog will quickly figure out that the collar only "fires" at his nose when he barks. To stop they spraying, the dog stops barking!

How Effective are Citronella Bark Collars?

I have personally seen citronella dog collars work effectively on dauchshunds, who previously were quite vociferous. When they were wearing their citronella collars, these dogs kept mum, although eventually they learned to tell the difference between their regular collars and the citronella dog collars. Those sneaky dogs would sometimes bark when they were wearing plain old ordinary dog collars, but they would NOT bark when the citronella collars were on.

In a Cornell Study of Citronella Collars versus adjustable intensity Shock Collars, all 8 of the dogs in the experiment reduced barking behavior while wearing citronella dog collars. Only 4 of the 8 dogs reduced their nuisance barking while wearing shock collars.

Other Alternatives

Of course, you can train your dog to stop barking without the citronella collar. My dog almost never barks, for a while I wondered if she was mute! But this is because, as a future guide dog, barking is prohibited, and I began correcting her (with a stern "no") at an early age for any barking or whining.

If you want your dog to bark sometimes (maybe if he's in the house with you and hears a stranger approach) but not others, a citronella dog collar could be just the thing to help him learn when barking is and is not acceptable.

Citronella Dog Collars can also be especially effective for dogs who tend to bark when you are not there to correct them. If your neighbors have complained that your dog barks all day when he is alone in the back yard, or if he tends to bark at your guests when you're having a party, training him to recognize that wearing the citronella collar means "no barking" could really help control this problem behavior.

Things to Keep in Mind:

1) You will need to buy refills for the citronella collar. How fast your dog will go through the spray depends on how much he barks. Although I have not tested, I would imagine that after a few months, your dog will hardly use any spray, and you will not need to buy much refill product.

2) The spray will freeze at 25 degrees farenheit. If your dog is kept outside in very cold weather, this will not be the time to train him with the collar. Try training him in the summer when it is warm, and by winter, he should be able to wear the collar as a reminder, without needing it to spray him. Also, if he is big enough, the collar might be warmed sufficiently by his body heat to stay liquid.

3) The dog may use the training from his collar to learn the generalized lesson to avoid barking, or he may catch on that he only gets sprayed when he's wearing the citronella collar, and continue his barking behavior when he's not wearing the bark collar.

4) If you like this method of training, you can also find remote-controlled citronella collars that you can use to "punish" your dog for other inappropriate behavior. These are operated with a held-held device, rather than being automatically activated by your dog's barking.

5) These collars require batteries to opperate, work on dogs from 6 lbs to 160 lbs and have been found to be more than twice as effective as electric shock collars. Click here to buy Citronella Dog Collars and refills.
