Do You Really Need a Dog Crate?
Is a dog crate
nothing more than a tiny prison for your dog? A pen to punish him
for too much zipping around the house? A time-out place to confine him when the
neighbor's kids come over?
No! Nothing could be further from the truth! Although you know YOU wouldn't like
to be confined to a crate, dog's actually enjoy their crate time, due to something
called the "Denning Instinct."
Just like you enjoy coming home after a long day and putting your feet up on the couch,
dog's like curling up in a small confined space, safe in the knowledge that nothing
can attack them from behind while they are sleeping.
A dog crate becomes a vital part of your dog's life during his first few weeks
with you when you use it for housebreaking him. As he learns to settle down
and be calm in his crate, it is a great tool to have with you all the time.
My dogs sleep in their crates every night. They stay in the crate every day while
I am gone and when we travel, the crate comes with us in the car. It keeps them safe
and comfortable on the highway, and it is also their home-away-from home in a stranger's
house or a hotel room. Wouldn't you sleep better if you could take your whole bed with you?
When you have a dog crate that fits your dog and he is comfortable in, it's a great
way to provide him a calm, secure, safe place to be, at home, or on the road.
