Kera: World's best canine model for funny dog pictures!

My dog Kera loves posing for "funny dog pictures." Although she's cute as can be, she has had a habit since puppyhood of not looking at the camera... she always has something else on her mind! I just keep snapping away on my digital camera though, and every now and then we capture a winner.

Digital cameras are great for taking funny dog pictures, as well as great shots of kids. When the film is free, you don't have to worry so much about everyone moving around at the wrong time. You just keep taking pictures, and eventually one of them turns out okay!

Kera is what I call a "Goldador" - a half lab, half golden retriever - and she was born to do a very special job. When she is old enough, she will go to train at a special school in Florida where professional dog trainers will teachher to work as a guide dog for the blind.

Kera was born at Southeastern Guide Dogs, Inc. in Florida. This non-profit breeding and training facility is dedicated to providing guide dogs free of charge to the blind and visually impaired. They are a great organization, if you are in the South and would consider opening your heart to a puppy to raise and socialize until it is old enough to go to "Guide Dog School," you can find out more about them at www.guidedogs.org.

Raising a future service animal comes with a lot of perks. Kera gets to go with me everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE! Sure, she comes to the park and out on walks with me, but she can also go to restaurants, movie theatres and the mall. Today we spent time touring a police station and fire station, met the men in uniform, and listened to the best their sirens could do - all with the intention of socializing Kera so that when she is working as a guide for the blind, she’ll be used to anything and everything they might come across. Spooked dogs don’t make good guides! (Now we just have to get her used to fireworks!)

Kera is a great dog with a big role, and I am simply volunteering to raise her for a year and a half until she has the maturity to handle the responsibility of working in a harness and leading a blind person.

I would love to see your funny puppy pictures you've snapped of your own furry rascals! Just email me.

As a guide dog puppy-in-training, Kera gets to go to a lot of fun places dogs would normally not be allowed. She had a lot of fun at her first baseball game: The Durham Bulls vs. The St. Louis Bats, but I think she was more excited by the hotdogs and kids running around than the action on the field!

On the Fourth of July, Kera got to ride in the Lions Club float in the Independence Day Parade through a small town near Charlotte, NC. The horses, tractors, and motorcycles didn't scare her one bit!

Each guide dog puppy at SouthEastern Guide Dogs, Inc. has a sponsor who gets to name the pup as a priviledge for donating money to cover much of the cost of raising the dog.

Kera's sponsor is the North Carolina Eye Bank right here in Winston-Salem. Kera was named for the corneal transplant surgery, called a keratoplasty, made possible by tissues collected by the eye bank.

When a friend's Uncle Roger came to town, he and Kera hit it off right away. He loves animals and although he doesn't have a Guide Dog at the moment, Kera convinced him that maybe that would be a good idea in the future!

Kera supports our troops in Uniform! For Halloween she dressed up as a very patriotic puppy in her BDU's!

Although it doesn't snow much here in North Carolina, when it does, Kera likes to stay warm! She goes romping outside and then in for a nice warm bowl of kibble!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my pictures of Kera. Please send me your funny dog pictures and I will be sure to add them to the site.
