Golden Retrievers are a COMMITMENT

Whoa!

Consider this before you even think about trying to purchase one or more Golden Retrievers. First off you must be aware that this is a long term decision that will affect your whole family for the next 10 to 15 years. Don't get caught up in a momentary lapse of reason when that little fur ball looks at you with his sad puppy dog eyes.

Secondly, is a Golden Retriever the right breed for your lifestyle? They are very active large dogs. Our particular Golden, Columbo, weighs 90 lbs and is not overweight at all. Are you a sedentary individual who won't get off the couch, or do you work 14 hours a day - then forget about a Golden. These dogs long for attention and require lots of physical activity. Outdoor exercise is preferable.

Thirdly, if you are buying a dog for protection purposes then I would suggest another breed. Golden Retrievers will not only be excited when a burglar enters your house, they will help carry out the merchandise just for the attention :-)!

Finally if you believe this is the type of breed for you I would suggest you go out and meet some Golden owners as well as their dogs. Spend a day getting acquainted with the breed by visiting a breeder or perhaps visit a field trial where you will see the breed at work.
