HEALTH CONCERN OF DOGS IN HEAT

by Tammy
(Stafford, VA)

I have a Bichon puppy who is in heat. This is her 2nd time and her 1st heat was in April of this year. This time she acts like she is in pain, whines a lot and pants. Is this normal for them to go through or could something else be wrong?

Emily Answers: Hi Tammy,

I have done some research on this topic, and it appears that both of these symptoms are very common. It is not clear to me what the cause of the problem is (e.g. Is she in "pain" from menstrual cramps, or does she just want to mate?)

Or is it something else entirely.

The only suggested solution was to spay your dog.

I think the bottom line is that panting and whining are common symptoms of being a heat and it is likely not a problem.

If you are still concerned, it may not be a bad idea to check with your vet.

Good luck and keep us posted!
