Indestructable Dog Beds
If you are looking for indestructable
dog beds my guess is that your dog has a bad habit
of chewing up his furniture! That's certainly a problem, but it's not insurmountable.
To avoid your dog chewing up his bedding which is unsafe (because it creates a choking hazard)
as well as expensive, start out with a bed that is not rewarding for the dog to chew.
Indestructable Dog Beds - Find One Your Dog Can't Chew!
In my own observations, dogs enjoy chewing on things that they can easily destroy or shred.
My dog Kera can't have stuffed animals, socks or Kleenex in range because she will go into
Search and Destroy mode and get them in her chompers before I realize what's happened.
So, your first goal should be identifying
what type of materials your dog enjoys chewing on and eliminate them from his bed ensemble.
One such indestructable dog bed is the Karunda
bed featured on the dog beds page. This is a great bed because it doesn't
have any big stuffing or cushions that your dog will be tempted to sink his teeth into. Instead
it provides comfort by creating a suspended platform, much like a hammock which is stretched on
a frame made of chew-resistant plastic. If your dog is an active chewer, you made need
to get him a brand new bed that does not have any fun-to-chew surfaces to help break him of this
habit.
Keep Misbehaving Bed-Chewers Kenneled!
Another idea is to prevent the dog from developing a chewing habit in the first place. When
I can't be available to supervise Kera's chewing - safe toys only, please! - I put her in a
plastic dog crate like the
one pictured on the dog kennel page, where she has absolutely no surfaces she can sink her
teeth into even if she tried her best to chew it!
Through puppyhood she was in this kennel with no mattress, blanket or padding whatsoever.
That's an indestructable dog bed if I've ever heard of one!
Despite these seemingly sparse conditions, she loves the crate and now that she's learned to
spend time there without chewing,
I've added a blanket on the bottom to keep her better insulated and to avoid her developing
calluses on her elbows.
She likes the crate so much she often snoozes there during the day.
While a crate may seem like an inhospitable prison cell to people like us, who would not want to
spend our lives behind bars, dogs really like kennel beds because they leave the dog protected on all sides
so no one can sneak up on them while they're napping! As indestructable dog beds go, they're
second to none!
TRAIN Your Dog Not to Chew
My last piece of advise, if you do have a problem chewer on your hands, is just to consider
training your dog not to chew on his bedding. If you have a fancy or comfortable day bed for him
you'll want him to be able to use it without ruining it. To do so, help him adjust slowly to
the new tempting bed and make sure that he learns from the start that this is NOT something
he's allowed to put his teeth on!
Only allow him to spend time with his soft chewy bedding
when you can supervise him (otherwise he's in his crate with no bedding or on another indestructable
dog bed of some kind). If you see him start
to gnaw, give him a stern correction (say "NO" in a deep voice and perhaps give a collar
correction as well). When he stops chewing and is lying on the bed peacefully, praise him and let
him know that this is the acceptable behavior you're looking for.
You wouldn't let your dog chew on YOUR couch. Well don't let him chew on his either! You're the
alpha dog in this situation, and you need to impress upon your puppy that you set the rules!
