Paper Training Dogs to Eliminate Indoors

Paper training dogs is a great idea for dogs who will be small as adults, suffer from health problems or are unvaccinated as puppies, and for the elderly, disabled, and apartment dwellers who may have difficult taking their dogs outdoors to relieve themselves on a timely basis.

If you would like to paper train your dog, you will need to find a good location for him to relive himself, generally with a easy-to-clean surface, such as linoleum. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas, basements or garages are common, practical locations to choose.

Next, when paper training dogs, you will need to identify a good material for your dog or puppy to relieve himself on. As the phrase "paper training" implies, old newspapers, layered thick, are commonly used. These days, however, we've got a number of other practical solutions, including "Wee Wee Pads" made expressly for this purpose.

If you have not already considered it, litter box training your dog might be a better solution. I've written an article about litter box training dogs that I'd be thrilled to have you read. If you'd like a more comprehensive run-down on the topic, Teresa Heath has written a book about how to litter train dogs and offers free coaching if you have any questions.

Finally, paper training dogs is a simple matter of going through the steps of regular house-training, using a clean, consistent area indoors as the "designated elimination spot" instead of a place outside.

You will need to confine, schedule, reinforce and punish your puppy as you paper train him, just like you would for any other potty training program.

Please read one of the following articles to learn how to go about creating a positive environment to help you begin successfully paper training dogs. I specifically recommend adapting my Litter Box Training ideas to help you with paper training dogs and teaching them to eliminate indoors.
