Find a Practical Prong Dog Collar

A prong dog collar is an extremely useful training tool, especially for large, strong, dominant, or aggressive dogs. Although you can train many dogs easily using a simple "choke chain" type of collar, a prong dog collar can be invaluable for the dog who does not respond well to a simple chain or nylon slip collar.

Training your dog to behave in and out of the house, on and off leash and in the presence of distractions is one of the most valuable things you can do with him. It will keep him safe in a wide variety of circumstances including areas near busy traffic and around other dogs, and it will mean that children and other people will be much more comfortable around him.

Prong dog collars are useful at preventing the dog from "leaning into" the collar and pulling you down the street. They are humane when used correctly - with a short snap or jerk on the leash accompanied by a stern "no" to correct behavior, followed by an immediate slackening of the leash.

These collars work like a slip collar, they tighten when you pull on the leash, and return to a slack position when you release the pressure on the leash. However, instead of simply sliding a smooth chain back and forth on your dog's neck, you're tightening a collar with teeth which point in toward your dog's neck, which does a better job of catching his attention.

Make sure that you only have him wear this collar when you are working with him, on training exercises. You should never leave a prong collar on your dog when he is not working, especially if he's left unsupervised in the house or yard. He should wear a plain buckle collar around the house.

Note: Until your dog is at least six months old, you should NOT use any type of choke collar or training collar on him! While your dog is still a youngster, these collars can damage his throat. Please stick to a simple buckle collar made of nylon or leather until your dog is at least six months old.

Prong Dog Collars:

A classic prong dog collar.

The original prong collar is metal with metal teeth. The teeth need not be sharpened or pointed, dull teeth will do the job just fine. Remember, you don't want to injur your dog, you just want to catch his attention.

A strong plastic prong collar is another good alternative.

It's important the the collar fit your dog properly. Adding or removing links can assure the proper collar size for your dog's neck. This is especially important if you have a large dog breed that continues to grow after you've started working with him.
